When it comes to 'Bang For Your Buck' you really can't beat the 65/66 Mustang Coupes. You get all the iconic looks and performance of the much more expensive fastback for 1/2 of the price. This one is a high quality example with maintenance records, original 'born with' VIN numbered
owner's manual, great options and best of all...no looming projects.
This one is a gorgeous example with a photo documented, restoration quality repaint done over 30 years ago. It has been garage stored and seen very few miles so you would be hard pressed to tell it hadn't been painted a month ago. The panels line up nice, the paint has a deep luster and it somehow pulls off Springtime Yellow in a way seldom seen. The car was done in an era of the 'Euro Look' so the window moldings, door mirror & wipers were blacked out and the windows received a dark tint. All of this is easily returned to stock if desired as the mirror is in the stock location and the moldings are stainless steel so a simple paint remover (once removed from car, duh) and polish would easily do the job.
Inside looks nice & tidy. Black upholstery fits nice, bezels shine brightly and even the chromed registers & A/C controls sparkle like new. The seats have obviously been recovered, carpet replaced and a new headliner stretched in place. The door panels appear to be the originals with some wear but still quite presentable. This is a nice car from the inside too.
This car is equipped with factory Air Conditioning. The system is complete and functioning, though it will need servicing including a fresh charge which is typical after storage. The fan units work nicely, switches work properly and the the pump cycles on and off correctly.
Under the hood lives a healthy 289 that has been upgraded with an aluminum intake manifold, 4 barrel carburetor and long tube headers. Nice additions that really make a big difference power wise without sacrificing driveability. The 3 speed transmission works fine, but this one is really begging for a T5 conversion. Good thing is that the bellhousing, clutch and clutch linkage are all compatible with the T5. The conversion consists of an adapter plate between the trans & bell, cross member and the T5.
The suspension has been upgraded with some Shelby inspired goodies. At each corner Koni shocks have been installed, larger front sway bar, relocated upper control arms and more make this a truly capable pony. Turn in is quick...steering is tight & responsive...this is actually a fun car to drive, though that 5 speed would make it all the better ;).
On the underside, this car is amazing. The floor pans are original, rust free and still wear their original Red Oxide paint proudly. Back in the 80's, just prior to the repaint, the car was involved in a single car spin out accident that damaged both rear quarter panels. Rather than short cut things, both quarters and the tail light panel were professionally replaced at the seams. The only signs of the repair are seen from below with the car on a lift. They are a strengthening panel on the drivers rear frame rail at the shackle and a dimple at the bump stop on the passenger frame rail, both are pictured.
