This is a fresh twist on a timeless classic. When this car rolled in it wore a coat of worn out vintage burgundy. We contemplated going back to stock but that would also mean losing the Shelby equipment, so we quickly nixed that. This was something we wanted to try, so we pulled the pin and this is what happened!
This Fastback was produced in October of ’66 in the San Jose, CA plant and was delivered to Al Eames Ford in Antioch, CA. The fastback lived its life in California until we brought it up to Washington, as such it is quite rust free. Prior to coming to us, it was involved in a rear end collision and there is some wrinkling in the trunk metal. The metal all appears to line up correctly, fiberglass panels fit better than a stock Shelby too. When we had the car painted we went for a nice quality driver paint job. The Matte Carbon is a great look and is quite popular as a wrap on high end cars. It has just enough ‘edge’ to be current but the chrome accents are a direct link to its Muscle Car heritage. The car really does stand out and throughout the reassembly the comments from customers have been very positive from both casual and hard core enthusiasts.
This GT came from the factory with a standard green interior. When it came to us it was already converted to Décor. We added new seat upholstery, carpet and trim. The dash is a JME unit with Autometer Gauges fitted in a factory style cluster. We went with a Corso Feroce steering wheel that looks the Shelby part with a modern twist. While not a completely new interior, the components look great and are easily nice enough for the weekend shows.
Under the hood the 390 runs excellent. It has been upgraded with a larger camshaft, aluminum intake manifold, electronic ignition, better exhaust and it works great! The 390 starts up quickly and reliably every time. It has a very aggressive note to the exhaust, the torque is excellent and this 390 moves!
The Toploader 4-Speed Transmission is widely recognized as one of the best transmissions ever built. This one is shifted through Hurst Competition Plus shifter for precise shifts. With this durable combo there is no worry of hurting the trans or linkage, just grab gears as hard and long as you want worry free!
Optioned with Factory Power Front Disc Brakes, this Mustang has the desirable 4-Piston Kelsey Hayes front calipers. They work nicely and give you the confidence you want to drive this car as intended.
This Mustang was ordered with Air Conditioning. The under dash components are still present and the vacuum lines still routed. We added the correct hot water shut off and heater hoses so the addition of the under-hood components are all that should be needed. These are available through the aftermarket and use modern compressors and refrigerants for reliability and ease of servicing.
We decided to stay classic and went with a 17” Torque Thrust wheel to both match the paint and stay with the classic look. The 17” rubber not only handles and drives better than a 15” tire, it provides many more tire compound options for modern driving.
So here you go, a fun twist on a classic that will not break the bank. A decent ‘67 GT500 carries a hefty 6-figure price tag, for about ½ that, you can have all the good looks and a Factory Big Block GT Fastback Pedigree to boot.
