1967 Shelby GT500’s are really the King of the Pony Car Era. No other car has captured the essence so well. With LeMans Stripes, Driving Lights, Spoilers and Air Scoops the car looks FAST just parked in the garage. When it comes to prices, few cars can touch the ‘Blue Chip’ Shelby values.
This GT500 is well documented in the Shelby World Registry. We also have the original Marti Report for extra verification. The Shelby and the Ford VIN’s have been verified as matching.
The car has lived most of its life in California. That fortunate bit of history means that this car is exceptionally rust free. It only came to Washington recently where it has been garage stored as well. The paint is older with the normal patina you would expect on a 25 year old paint job. It has been stored indoors but was driven so expect the normal stone chips and minor scratches. It was not an expensive job, but it still presents well.
Inside the interior is really in nice condition and appears to be the original with the exception of the carpet. The factory 140mph Speedometer & 8k Tachometer are still present along with the original Stewart Warner equipped gauge pod under the dash. The gauges work properly. The interior would certainly be fine as is for a driven car and really makes a statement about the cars authenticity.
Under that sexy hood is a fresh, date-correct 428 Interceptor rebuilt by Dave Payton at Performance Automotive Machine in Everett, WA. The rebuild consists of: forged pistons with coated skirts, correct large bolt Interceptor rods, balanced reciprocating assembly, high volume oil pump, hardened valve seats, new valves, Comp Cams Thumper Cam kit with new valve springs, retainers, keepers, double roller timing chain and gears. The engine was assembled with a concours reproduction bolt kit from AMK. These engines were not VIN stamped until 1968 so date coding is how they are measured as being correct. The original Shelby Aluminum Dual Quad Intake Manifold is the correct C7ZX unit with the correct ‘BJ’ & ‘BK’ Carburetors on top. As far as cool tidbits the original Dual Point Distributor (just upgraded with a Pertronix Ignitor) is present as well.
The C7 Cylinder heads are correct with the Thermactor ports. The engine looks factory but runs a whole lot stronger. The Thumper Cam is light years ahead in technology. It combines a 107’ lobe separation with tons of exhaust duration to give you that aggressive Muscle Car sound without sacrificing low end torque. In fact, the torque is incredible. Just a light bit of throttle will easily haze the BFG’s. Get deeper into the throttle and you outright destroy them. This is the performance you expect from one of the most iconic Muscle Cars ever made.
To handle that new power reliably, the close ratio Toploader 4 Speed was just rebuilt by a well know transmission shop. While it was out the factory ‘Reverse Lock-Out Shifter’ was rebuilt. It works nicely with good engagement and reliable shifts. The whole assembly has been nicely detailed in the correct cast iron paint.
While the engine was out the front suspension was completely replaced. New upper & lower control arms, spring saddles, springs & bushings were installed. This car has the ‘Shelby Drop’ on the front control arms to achieve the lowered ride height with the stock components. With the large front sway bar and Koni shocks, this Shelby can handle surprisingly well. In the corners the front end is flat and turn in is quick & precise. Basically everything you expect a Big Block Mustang to not be.
The 10 spoke wheels are wrapped in the industry standard BF Goodrich Radial T/A’s. They look great with their white letters and fill up the wheel wells nicely.
The Air Conditioning on this Shelby was added at some point in the past. While not original to this car, it utilizes the correct components and appears as factory. Due to most of our cars being exported, we have not charged the system. It will need leak tested and a proper charge in order to be functional.
So, if you are a true driving enthusiast and have always wanted a Shelby take a good look at this one. The mechanicals are in excellent condition, the pedigree is undeniable and it is ready to enjoy NOW. As in this summer, not three summers from now. It presents nicely but sits perfectly in the rare position between the overpriced project cars and the un-useable show cars.
