No other car shaped the resurgence of the US performance car market like the Mustang 5.0 did. Industries were literally built around these cars. Any race track, boulevard or cruise were dominated in the 80's & 90's by these cars. They were inexpensive and plentiful. Even more than that though was the fact that no other car was as fun to drive or easily modified.
Fast forward 30 years and the 5.0 market is really starting to heat up with original low mile cars rapidly becoming scarce. Auction prices have reached a ludicrous point with Barrett Jackson seeing $47,700 only a couple of months ago for a similarly equipped 1990 model with a red interior. I could go on but who wants to hear about that when you have thoughts of 'Gatorback' smoke floating through your mind.
This GT has somehow survived in very good & original condition. The paint is mostly original and shines like the day it pulled off the showroom floor. The body panels line up incredibly well too and all appear to be original with original vin stickers. Take a look at the pics, this was a great example back in the 80's and is nothing short of incredible now.
Inside, this one really could make you think you just stepped out of a time machine and into a Ford dealer in 1989. If you saw these cars new, you will know what I mean. From the way the woven upholstery grabs your clothes to the way the doors sound when they close, you know. The seats are still firm like new with power lumbar, and the steering wheel still has that little bit of 'squish'. The power mirrors, tilt steering wheel, ash tray, power windows/locks, gauges, lights and stock stereo work beautifully. She even has the factory sunroof which pops up or all the way out . . . or run the A/C that blows cold.
Under the hood the 5.0 is still equipped with all the stuff that we loved to take off. Smog pump, yep. Crappy air inlet system, yep. Horsepower robbing intake manifold, yep. All that stuff that would have normally been discarded has some how managed to stay put here. The clutch works nicely and the T5 shifts smoothly. The only modifications are an off road pipe, a Flowmaster American Thunder cat-back kit and Mishimoto radiator. You know a 5.0 by the sound of the starter and that intitial 'whooom' exhaust note. The 5.0 has the most unmistakable exhaust sound in automotive history.
I could go on & on, I guess I already did. However, these cars do elicit an emotional response from those of us who lusted after them back in the day. Heck, I have a highly modified one in my garage already. That said, it is cars like this that become true investments. They love to be driven and with a little discernment can still gain quite a bit of value while you enjoy them.
