The 71-73 Mach 1's have been silently advancing in the market and the surge in prices has really caught a lot of enthusiasts and investors flat footed. Gone are the days of cheap prices and now its just starting to get really interesting. Boss 351 prices have started to give the 302's a run for their money and its common to see 71 Mach 1's well into the $40's for nice, well equipped drivers. That would be unimaginable only a couple of years ago. A numbers matching, well equipped 4-Speed Cobra Jet at this price range is a RARE opportunity.
Obviously this one is visibly challenged. Faded paint, dings, scratches and some rust...yep its got it. However, it also has some pretty solid floors and frame rails. The hood suffers from the typical trunk pan & Mach 1 hood rust and both are best off replaced. There will need to be some localized repair on the lower quarter & drop offs, see pics. This one leaves some room for sweat equity while not requiring full exterior cut & weld body panel replacements.
Inside the interior is pretty much original and showing its age. With the exception of the radio & speakers its pretty much as delivered.
Under the hood it appears to be all stock and original. The original Cobra Jet Chrome Lid Air Cleaner is the first to greet your eyes. The engine is the numbers matching unit, see VIN stamp pic. It does run pretty well with just a bit of the Cleveland valve train tick that seems to have cleared up for the moment. The 4 Speed Transmission is the correct BJ code Toploader with the Factory Hurst Linkage. The Reverse-Lockout is still in place and functioning and the back-up lights still work.
The Factory Air Conditioning appears complete down the the heavy duty radiator. Currently the charge is low and a full inspection & service will need to be done to bring it back to life.
The original Owner's Card complete with other Ford documentation right down to a recall notice are all included, see pics.
Obviously this isn't a restored car or a garage kept survivor. It has made it this far without any obvious major changes though. You can get in, hit the key and take off. However, we don't think its ready for any type of long road trip or daily driver status until some deeper servicing is done. Figure a full inspection of the braking system, wheel bearings, etc before any serious use.
